In June/July 2015 in the Mendelsohn Hall in Luckenwalde, Teltow Fläming, Brandenburg, a major art event will take place on the theme Displaced 2015.
Displacement, escape and transformation, dislocation, resettlement and the chasing away of people, and animals, is the topic that concerns us within the festival Schlachten – “Fläming battles”. This ties in with the concept of displaced persons, which was a term used by the Allies after World War 2.
The venue is The Hat Factory by the well known architect Erich Mendelsohn. A former industrial craft in itself, hat making is a metaphor for displaced and thus the factory is an ideal venue for our festival. Approximately 10,000 square meters are available for expansive projects.
The scientific context is provided by the esteemed Polish historian Jan M. Piskorski with the publishing of his book “The Outcasts”, that shows Europe to be the a main stage for the phenomenon of displacement in the 20th century: from the 1st World War until 20 years after WW2 about 80 million people became refugees.
Now comes as a new phenomenon the Pegida movement in Eastern Germany and the recent terrorist attacks in Paris. Casting a light from an artistic point of view, without drawing any conclusions, can surprise and raise the discussion to another level.
Schlachten Fläming are organizing an international “battle” team for a new festival for the Fläming region, which itself has witnessed many battles in the past. And now in 2015, 70 years after the end of WW2, it is dedicated to the theme of the “Displaced” being.
